Asia Dive News : Malaysian divers aim for world record in marine park cleanup

One hundred and forty volunteer local and foreign divers are aiming to create a world record for the longest cleanup of the Tunku Abdul Rahman marine park seabed near here.

The endeavour organised by Astro Malaysia through its social corporate responsibility programme, Astro Kasih involved 168 hours of continuous cleaning up of 14 diving locations beginning today.

Divers from Malaysia, France, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States of America, Lithuania, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Holland are participating in the bid to set a mark in the Guiness World Records.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the endeavour would further promote the state as a destination choice for foreign tourists.

"This effort would surely attract more tourists to Sabah which is so rich in natural beauty and we hope it will also enhance awareness among the people to conserve the environment," he told reporters after sending off the divers at 8.30am at Pulau Gaya near here.
