Micronesia :: Palau : Teshio Maru

Having left Malakal Harbour before the US air strikes of March 30th and 31st 1944, this vessel was nevertheless bombed and strafed by a passing US fighter and managed to drift onto a reef. After the war she was salvaged and later slipped off the reef to finally lie on her starboard side in 24m of water.

As the ship managed to "escape" Palau, she is located further away from the island than any other regularly dived wreck and visibility is much better here than in and around the murky waters of Malakal Harbour so it's possible to view large parts of the 320 ft vessel at the same time.

Because she lies on her side, you can view both the underside and the deck. Clearly visible is a gun mounted on the stern although the profusion of coral that has grown on it means that the original shape is not immediately apparent. The hull is still fairly intact and can be penetrated quite safely. Inside you'll discover bits and pieces of crockery and various other artefacts. This is the most photographed wreck around Palau.
